More about Wausau Wausau is the county seat of Marathon County, Wisconsin. The city is located at 44°57N 89°38W with an altitude of 364.2 meters. The Wisconsin River divides the city. Wausau is 180 miles east of Minneapolis, Minnesota. According to the 2000 census, Wausau had a population of 38,426 people. The city is located adjacent to and partially within the Town of Wausau. The Wausau metropolitan area had a 2000 census population of 78,664 and, besides the City of Wausau, includes Schofield, Rothschild, Weston, Kronenwetter, and the town of Rib Mountain. The city forms the core of the United States Census Bureaus Wausau MSA, which includes all of Marathon County (2000 population: 125,834). The industries of Wausau include paper manufacturing, insurance, home manufacturing, and tourism. Wausau is home to the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, famous for its "Birds in Art" collection. Wausau is also home to a world-class kayak course, having hosted numerous regional, national, and world competitions over the last two decades. The local newspaper is the Wausau Daily Herald[1]. Wausau Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 38,426 people, 15,678 households, and 9,328 families residing in the city. The population density is 899.7/km² (2,330.7/mi²). There are 16,668 housing units at an average density of 390.3/km² (1,011.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 85.91% White, 0.54% Black or African American, 0.59% Native American, 11.41% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 1.21% from two or more races. 1.04% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. The percentage of Asians reflects Wausaus large Hmong community. There are 15,678 households out of which 27.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.7% are married couples living together, 9.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.5% are non-families. 33.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 3.08. In the city the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 92.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.3 males. The median income for a household in the city is $36,831, and the median income for a family is $47,065. Males have a median income of $33,076 versus $24,303 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,227. 11.4% of the population and 7.2% of families are below the poverty line.
