More about Red Oak Red Oak is a city located in Ellis County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,301. More recent estimates of the citys population give it as 6200. A local council of governments projects that number to grow to upwards of 60,000 by the year 2030, as it is on the verge of explosive suburban growth. The mayor of Red Oak, Todd Little, appeared on NBCs Today program on July 13, 2004, speaking on the ramifications of homeland security on the upcoming presidential election. In May 2004, Mayor Little was caught by Red Oak police while damaging and destroying several political campaign signs belonging to city council candidates he opposed. Long, Sherry (May 13, 2004). Red Oak Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,301 people, 1,570 households, and 1,238 families residing in the city. The population density is 212.4/km² (550.0/mi²). There are 1,625 housing units at an average density of 80.2/km² (207.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 85.98% White, 5.42% African American, 0.53% Native American, 0.88% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 4.65% from other races, and 2.53% from two or more races. 11.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,570 households out of which 43.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.5% are married couples living together, 16.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.1% are non-families. 19.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.10. In the city the population is spread out with 30.6% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 31.4% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 7.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 89.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.2 males. The median income for a household in the city is $48,583, and the median income for a family is $61,250. Males have a median income of $38,227 versus $26,276 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,049. 6.2% of the population and 6.3% of families are below the poverty line.
