The town was named in honor of Nathanael Greene; incidentally, it is the only Greeneville in the United States to have kept the true spelling â€” the other Greenvilles dropped the trailing e. USS Greeneville is named in honor of this town. Greeneville Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 15,198 people, 6,641 households, and 4,097 families residing in the town. The population density is 417.9/kmÂ² (1,082.4/miÂ²). There are 7,212 housing units at an average density of 198.3/kmÂ² (513.6/miÂ²). The racial makeup of the town is 92.03% White, 5.74% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.88% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 1.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
