Dresden Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,855 people, 1,212 households, and 784 families residing in the town. The population density is 207.6/km² (537.9/mi²). There are 1,331 housing units at an average density of 96.8/km² (250.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.54% White, 4.34% African American, 0.04% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 0.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,212 households out of which 26.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.6% are married couples living together, 12.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% are non-families. 31.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.22 and the average family size is 2.78. In the town the population is spread out with 20.7% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 20.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 86.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.8 males. The median income for a household in the town is $26,701, and the median income for a family is $37,321. Males have a median income of $27,589 versus $21,322 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,286. 10.6% of the population and 6.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.0% of those under the age of 18 and 16.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
