More about Coatesville Coatesville is a city located in Chester County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 10,838. Richard Hamilton, a basketball player with the Detroit Pistons of the National Basketball Association, was born in Coatesville and is a local hero. The city, known as the "Pittsburgh of the East," was the home of the former Lukens Steel Corporation, which was bought out by the former Bethlehem Steel corporation and the Ohio-based International Steel Group, or ISG, in 2002. Called "Da Ville," by its inhabitants, Coatesville is known as the most "ghetto" town in Chester County. This is perhaps because it is 49.15% African American and 22.1% of the population is below the poverty line. Coatesville Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 10,838 people, 3,940 households, and 2,580 families residing in the city. The population density is 2,261.9/km² (5,848.8/mi²). There are 4,360 housing units at an average density of 909.9/km² (2,352.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 41.91% White, 49.15% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 4.60% from other races, and 3.42% from two or more races. 10.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,940 households out of which 35.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 30.7% are married couples living together, 28.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.5% are non-families. 29.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.70 and the average family size is 3.33. In the city the population is spread out with 31.7% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 17.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 87.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.2 males. The median income for a household in the city is $29,912, and the median income for a family is $36,375. Males have a median income of $31,782 versus $24,774 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,079. 22.1% of the population and 18.3% of families are below the poverty line.
