Artesia Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 10,692 people, 4,080 households, and 2,896 families residing in the city. The population density is 518.0/km² (1,341.3/mi²). There are 4,593 housing units at an average density of 222.5/km² (576.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 72.25% White, 1.44% African American, 1.54% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.15% Pacific Islander, 21.56% from other races, and 2.86% from two or more races. 44.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,080 households out of which 36.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.8% are married couples living together, 14.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.0% are non-families. 26.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.15. In the city the population is spread out with 30.3% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 92.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.6 males. The median income for a household in the city is $29,529, and the median income for a family is $34,598. Males have a median income of $30,085 versus $19,566 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,911. 20.1% of the population and 15.7% of families are below the poverty line.
