The City of Hackensack is governed under the 1923 Municipal Manager Law. Early astronaut Walter Schirra was born there. Hackensack is also the home of the New Jersey Naval Museum and the WWII submarine USS Ling. There are 18,113 households out of which 21.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.8% are married couples living together, 13.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 47.3% are non-families. 39.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 3.08. In the city the population is spread out with 18.2% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 38.4% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 98.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.5 males. The median income for a household in the city is $49,316, and the median income for a family is $56,953. Males have a median income of $39,636 versus $32,911 for females. The per capita income for the city is $26,856. 9.3% of the population and 6.8% of families are below the poverty line.
