More about Carteret Carteret is a borough located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 20,709. Carteret Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 20,709 people, 7,039 households, and 5,208 families residing in the borough. The population density is 1,833.9/km² (4,747.4/mi²). There are 7,320 housing units at an average density of 648.2/km² (1,678.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 68.76% White, 9.54% African American, 0.24% Native American, 8.32% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 9.26% from other races, and 3.86% from two or more races. 23.37% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 7,039 households out of which 35.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.1% are married couples living together, 16.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.0% are non-families. 21.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.88 and the average family size is 3.38. In the borough the population is spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 30.0% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 15.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 94.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.0 males. The median income for a household in the borough is $47,148, and the median income for a family is $54,609. Males have a median income of $40,172 versus $28,132 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $18,967. 11.0% of the population and 8.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.8% of those under the age of 18 and 9.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
