More about Matthews Matthews is a town located in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina and a suburb of the city of Charlotte. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 22,127. Matthews Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 22,127 people, 7,837 households, and 6,144 families residing in the town. The population density is 601.2/km² (1,557.1/mi²). There are 8,138 housing units at an average density of 221.1/km² (572.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 90.25% White, 5.34% African American, 0.33% Native American, 2.36% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.78% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. 2.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 7,837 households out of which 43.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.1% are married couples living together, 7.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.6% are non-families. 17.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.79 and the average family size is 3.19. In the town the population is spread out with 29.3% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 9.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.5 males. The median income for a household in the town is $67,034, and the median income for a family is $75,791. Males have a median income of $52,143 versus $32,288 for females. The per capita income for the town is $27,471. 4.0% of the population and 2.7% of families are below the poverty line.
