It is famous for a statue of Herman the German. New Ulm Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 13,594 people, 5,494 households, and 3,554 families residing in the city. The population density is 597.8/km² (1,548.3/mi²). There are 5,736 housing units at an average density of 252.2/km² (653.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.10% White, 0.11% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 0.65% from two or more races. 1.26% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 5,494 households out of which 29.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.9% are married couples living together, 8.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% are non-families. 31.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.89. In the city the population is spread out with 23.1% under the age of 18, 12.6% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 95.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.2 males. The median income for a household in the city is $40,044, and the median income for a family is $51,309. Males have a median income of $34,196 versus $24,970 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,308. 6.2% of the population and 4.6% of families are below the poverty line.
