More about Royal Oak Royal Oak is a city in Oakland County, Michigan; it is a suburb of Detroit. At the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 60,062. Royal Oak Charter Township is nearby, but is legally separate from the city. The past decade has seen much in the way of development as the citys downtown has been transformed into a trendy and urban-chic restaurant, shopping, and entertainment district. Construction is underway on six high-rise building developments, with completion expected by 2006. Points of Interest include: the Royal Oak Music Theatre, the Main Art Theatre, and the many unique shops, cafes, and restaurants which line the streets of the downtown area. While many view this city as a trendy hang-out, people who have lived there a while will remember when the busiest business on Main Street was Billings Feed Co. Royal Oak is the hometown of Tom Hayden, best known for being one of the founders of Students for a Democratic Society. It is also the birthplace of B-Movie star Bruce Campbell. Royal Oak Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 60,062 people, 28,880 households, and 14,440 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,961.9/km² (5,083.0/mi²). There are 29,942 housing units at an average density of 978.1/km² (2,534.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.80% White, 1.54% African American, 0.26% Native American, 1.56% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 1.40% from two or more races. 1.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 28,880 households out of which 20.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.9% are married couples living together, 7.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 50.0% are non-families. 40.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.06 and the average family size is 2.86. In the city the population is spread out with 17.8% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 38.8% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 95.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.6 males. The median income for a household in the city is $52,252, and the median income for a family is $68,109. Males have a median income of $50,562 versus $36,392 for females. The per capita income for the city is $30,990. 4.3% of the population and 2.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.4% of those under the age of 18 and 5.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
