More about Galesburg Galesburg is a city in Kalamazoo County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,988. Galesburg is on the north side of the Kalamazoo River on the boundary between Comstock Charter Township on the west and Charleston Township on the east, but is politically independent of both. The city is situated on Michigan State Highway 96 and is just north of Interstate 94 (with exits due south of the citys west side and about one mile to the east). Kalamazoo is about ten miles to the west and Battle Creek is about ten miles to the east. For statistical purposes, the Census Bureau has defined Greater Galesburg as a census-designated place consisting of the urbanized area outside the citys municipal boundaries. Galesburg Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,988 people, 765 households, and 491 families residing in the city. The population density is 552.2/km² (1,429.8/mi²). There are 811 housing units at an average density of 225.3/km² (583.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.38% White, 0.96% African American, 0.91% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 1.41% from two or more races. 1.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 765 households out of which 37.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.4% are married couples living together, 17.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.8% are non-families. 28.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 2.98. In the city the population is spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 11.0% from 18 to 24, 30.4% from 25 to 44, 18.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 98.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.5 males. The median income for a household in the city is $34,663, and the median income for a family is $44,038. Males have a median income of $35,167 versus $24,886 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,785. 12.9% of the population and 11.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.1% of those under the age of 18 and 5.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
