Many of the residents work for the towns Georgia-Pacific plant or are students at the University of Maine. As of March 2004, Old Town is currently experiencing a dispute over whether a new landfill should be created in the town. Old Town is also home to a previous residence of Melville Weston Fuller, former chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. The population density is 82.0/km² (212.3/mi²). There are 3,686 housing units at an average density of 37.2/km² (96.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.62% White, 0.65% African American, 1.48% Native American, 1.83% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.28% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. 0.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,426 households out of which 26.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.7% are married couples living together, 10.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.8% are non-families. 29.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 2.83. In the city the population is spread out with 20.0% under the age of 18, 18.3% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who are 65 years of age or older.
