More about LeavenworthLeavenworth is a city located in Leavenworth County, Kansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 35,420. It is a small city in the northeast portion of Kansas. It is bordered on the east by the Missouri River. Leavenworth, founded in 1854, was the first incorporated city in Kansas. It sprang up south of Fort Leavenworth, the oldest active Army post west of the Mississippi, which was established in 1827 by Colonel Henry Leavenworth. Leavenworths main industry is prisons. It is the site of a large federal prison and several smaller prisons, including the militarys primary prison, the United States Disciplinary Barracks. Leavenworth is a conservative community with a diverse population. It is the county seat of Leavenworth County. It is home to University of Saint Mary (Kansas), operated by the Sisters of Charity. Leavenworth Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 35,420 people, 12,035 households, and 8,219 families residing in the city. The population density is 581.7/km² (1,506.8/mi²). There are 12,936 housing units at an average density of 212.4/km² (550.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 76.77% White, 16.32% African American, 0.76% Native American, 1.48% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 1.72% from other races, and 2.78% from two or more races. 5.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 12,035 households out of which 39.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.0% are married couples living together, 11.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% are non-families. 27.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.19. In the city the population is spread out with 27.7% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 34.8% from 25 to 44, 19.0% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 112.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 116.2 males. The median income for a household in the city is $40,681, and the median income for a family is $48,836. Males have a median income of $36,953 versus $24,235 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,785. 9.1% of the population and 6.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.1% of those under the age of 18 and 10.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
