More about SmyrnaSmyrna is a city located in Cobb County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 41,000. Census estimates of 2003 indicate a population of 45,610. The citys total area is approximately 13.9 square miles. During the American Civil War, it was known as Ruffs Station, along the Western & Atlantic Railroad (then-known as the State Road). In 1862 it was the site of the Battle of Ruffs Station on July 4th during the Atlanta Campaign. The city was later known as Varners Station, and subsequently named after a nearby campground, which was in turn named for the historic Smyrna. Smyrna is one of the closest suburbs to Atlanta, located near the northern intersection of I-285 and I-75, which is the site of Cumberland Mall, a large commercial district including several shopping centers. It is also near Vinings, Marietta, Powder Springs, and Mableton. The city operates its own library, separate from the Cobb County Public Library System (CCPLS). Smyrna is also the birthplace of actress Julia Roberts. The nickname "Smyrnaville" is popular among the citys youth, but it has never at any time been an official name of the city. Other nicknames include "the SV" and "the ville". Smyrna Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 40,999 people, 18,372 households, and 9,498 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,138.8/km² (2,949.9/mi²). There are 19,633 housing units at an average density of 545.3/km² (1,412.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 59.44% White, 27.19% African American, 0.41% Native American, 3.92% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 6.61% from other races, and 2.40% from two or more races. 13.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 18,372 households out of which 22.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.2% are married couples living together, 11.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 48.3% are non-families. 37.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.92. In the city the population is spread out with 19.5% under the age of 18, 10.8% from 18 to 24, 43.8% from 25 to 44, 17.6% from 45 to 64, and 8.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 95.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.5 males. The median income for a household in the city is $47,572, and the median income for a family is $53,821. Males have a median income of $38,896 versus $35,465 for females. The per capita income for the city is $27,637. 8.9% of the population and 6.7% of families are below the poverty line.
