Austell Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,359 people, 2,009 households, and 1,386 families residing in the city. The population density is 363.6/km² (942.1/mi²). There are 2,144 housing units at an average density of 145.5/km² (376.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 65.42% White, 24.58% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.90% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 6.40% from other races, and 2.26% from two or more races. 11.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,009 households out of which 35.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.3% are married couples living together, 18.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.0% are non-families. 24.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.15. In the city the population is spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 37.0% from 25 to 44, 17.8% from 45 to 64, and 8.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 97.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.4 males. The median income for a household in the city is $38,933, and the median income for a family is $39,635. Males have a median income of $31,750 versus $22,944 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,924. 12.8% of the population and 11.0% of families are below the poverty line.
