The citys community is known in auto racing circles for its long tradition of of involvement in the sport (many racing skills originally developed as a consequence of moonshine activity in the area). Named for William Crosby Dawson. Dawsonville Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 619 people, 234 households, and 153 families residing in the city. The population density is 123.8/km² (320.9/mi²). There are 257 housing units at an average density of 51.4/km² (133.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.58% White, 0.65% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.97% from other races, and 0.65% from two or more races. 1.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 234 households out of which 31.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.0% are married couples living together, 15.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.6% are non-families. 29.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.88. In the city the population is spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 12.4% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 11.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 114.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 117.3 males. The median income for a household in the city is $34,327, and the median income for a family is $39,000. Males have a median income of $27,500 versus $25,125 for females.
