Claymont Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 9,220 people, 3,792 households, and 2,400 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 1,687.1/km² (4,371.4/mi²). There are 4,193 housing units at an average density of 767.3/km² (1,988.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 71.04% White, 23.33% African American, 0.33% Native American, 1.44% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.63% from other races, and 2.21% from two or more races. 4.18% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,792 households out of which 32.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.6% are married couples living together, 17.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% are non-families. 30.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 3.01. In the CDP the population is spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 34.0% from 25 to 44, 19.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 89.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.9 males. The median income for a household in the CDP is $40,813, and the median income for a family is $46,780. Males have a median income of $36,493 versus $28,399 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $20,211. 7.2% of the population and 6.6% of families are below the poverty line.
