It was founded in 1650 and incorporated as a city in 1784. Originally a busy sailing port and then an industrial center, it is now largely a residential city and college town. The median age is 36 years. The median income for a household in the city is $47,162, and the median income for a family is $60,845. Males have a median income of $45,790 versus $34,648 for females.
