It is a large college town (home to Colorado State University) in the north central region of the state, along what is known as the Colorado Front Range. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 118,652. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 3.01. In the city the population is spread out with 21.5% under the age of 18, 22.1% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 17.0% from 45 to 64, and 7.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 28 years. For every 100 females there are 100.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.7 males. The median income for a household in the city is $44,459, and the median income for a family is $59,332. Males have a median income of $40,856 versus $28,385 for females. The per capita income for the city is $22,133. 14.0% of the population and 5.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.3% of those under the age of 18 and 5.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line. The largest employer in Fort Collins is Colorado State University. Other major employers in Fort Collins include Hewlett Packard, Anheuser-Busch, Poudre Valley Hospital, Poudre School District, and Agilent Technologies.
