There are 2,880 housing units at an average density of 161.9/km² (419.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 54.46% White, 40.79% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 3.82% from other races, and 0.65% from two or more races. 5.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,569 households out of which 29.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.6% are married couples living together, 17.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.1% are non-families. 31.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.96. In the city the population is spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 20.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 84.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.6 males. The median income for a household in the city is $22,162, and the median income for a family is $27,618. Males have a median income of $27,778 versus $17,247 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,453. 28.7% of the population and 24.3% of families are below the poverty line.
